Pediatrics: Site Visit Summary

For pediatrics, both site evaluations were through Blackboard. Both site evaluations were done in a group with other students also in their pediatric rotations. The content of our evaluations included reviewing pharmacology cards together, each presenting a case, and a journal article. Professor Maida would ask us questions about each other’s cases, for example after a student would present the HPI of a patient, Professor Maida would ask the rest of us what the differential diagnosis should be. I thought it was a great way to work on bettering my skills with forming a differential diagnosis. I thought the way we reviewed our pharmacology cards together also had value, because we were testing each other on the drugs. Practicing questions is a good way to remember material because you really interact with the information that way.

At my first site visit I presented on a 7 month infant with recurrent vomiting that was likely gastroesophageal reflux, due to her age. At the second site visit I presented a case of a 15-year-old with paroxysmal palpitations, I chose this case because it had a variety of differential diagnoses and was interesting because I thought palpitations were a disease typically seen in older patients.

It was enjoyable to discuss other students’ rotations, as I was mainly inpatient for my pediatric rotation  (ED, newborn service/NICU) it was interesting to learn from other students how outpatient primary care pediatrics worked because it was so different from pediatrics in a hospital setting.
